Lionel Messi vetoes Barcelona’s move for primary target
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has strongly vetoed the club’s transfer for one of its primary targets, thereby forcing it to look at other options.
Argentine and Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi is not in favour of having Antoine Griezmann at the Camp Nou even though the team management is keen on landing the 28 year-old at Barcelona, as per Fox Sports. As far as the reports are concerned, Messi has made it clear to his teammates that he has had no hand in the rumoured transfer talks between the Blaugrana and the Rojiblancos.
Griezmann has been linked with a move to the Camp Nou for a bit too long now and his recent announcement of this season being his last at Atletico Madrid, it only adds fuel to the fire. Messi and co. do not believe that the 28 year-old is what the club needs at the moment. With Dembele, Suarez and Messi in the ranks, replacing Dembele looks a bit tough as he seems to be finding his groove. Playing Suarez and Messi is a no-brainer. With Coutinho in the subs and Frenkie de Jong yet to arrive, there is clearly no room for Antoine Griezmann.
Moreover, big-match players are what Ernesto Valverde’s side would be looking for in the upcoming transfer market following their recent shocking exit from the UCL semis against Liverpool. The Catalans have got plenty when it comes to attacking options and Griezmann would just add to it which would not make much of sense. Perhaps a defensive midfielder is what they would be aiming at or a quality defender who is quick enough to intercept those through balls.
Messi has a big say on the club’s transfer talks and it’s highly unlikely that the board of directors would go against Messi, Suarez and co. in order to land Griezmann at the Nou. However, if any of these speculations hold true, one can finally see the long-standing links between Antoine and Barcelona being put to bed.
